Butch Worden has been a dedicated coach, educator, and mentor to young athletes in Montgomery County for decades. As the current Commissioner of RISE Flag Football Bethesda, he brings a lifetime of experience and passion to the field—helping kids grow not just as athletes but as confident, respectful, and resilient individuals.

After earning his PE degree from the Univ. of Maryland, Butch began at Walter Johnson High School (WJ) as the Varsity Football Offensive Coordinator and later Head Football Coach. In ’98 he led the Wildcats to their best season in 35 years—a milestone that reflects his ability to motivate and inspire young people.

Butch’s love for working with kids goes far beyond football. He has coached girls’ basketball, lacrosse, co-ed bocce, and is the Asst. Athletic Director at WJ. He’s known for his coaching skills as well as his patience, leadership, and care for every child with whom he works.

In 2024 Montgomery County introduced girls’ flag football as a varsity sport and Butch was the very first coach hired for the program in the county. He guided his team to the division championship in their inaugural season, building strong bonds and showing what’s possible when young athletes are supported and empowered. “This is the most fun I’ve ever had coaching,” he said. “I can’t wait to bring flag football to even more students across the county.”

Whether your child is just starting out or looking for a fun challenge, Coach Worden’s program offers a safe, welcoming environment where they can learn, grow, and love the game.
