Game Week 13 - FIRST DIVISION
UCTISL First Division Preview: Promotion Race Tightens as Bottom Sides Bite Back
Six mouth-watering fixtures are on the docket this weekend for the UCTISL First Division, with the promotion picture sharpening at the top and a stunning shock result down at the bottom giving the relegation battle a jolt of drama. Here's the full lowdown ahead of the action.
Saturday, September 12, 2:30 PM — Upper Campus vs Avenue Rangers (UCT FC Kopano Astroturf)
Upper Campus, the long-running side led by veteran boss Kennedy Makgotla, will be desperate to bounce back after being routed 9-0 by league leaders OBZ Square last time out. They face an Avenue Rangers side under Ndimphiwe Hlati that had been flying high in sixth, playing their trademark aggressive, high-pressing football — but the Rangers arrive with a dented ego after a shock 1-0 defeat to bottom-club College House. Something has to give.
Saturday, September 12, 4:00 PM — Carinus vs Woolsack (UCT FC Kopano Astroturf)
This one carries real weight in the survival fight. Carinus, who've managed just nine goals all season, slipped to a 3-1 loss against Salisbury FC last weekend and sit 14th. Across the pitch, Woolsack — last season's shock champions who chose to stay rather than step up to the Premier Division — currently occupy the relegation playoff spot in 16th. Neither side can afford to slip further, making this a tense relegation four-pointer.
Saturday, September 12, 5:30 PM — University House vs Quality Ballers FC (UCT FC Kopano Astroturf)
Two struggling sides collide, but University House will go in with the momentum. "The Eagles," led by captain Jonathan "Stretch" Isineyi and manager Liso Bonga, thrashed 11 And Under 5-0 last time out. Quality Ballers FC, meanwhile, prop up the entire division and were beaten 3-0 by Bayer Neverlosen most recently — they'll need something special here to keep automatic relegation at bay.
Sunday, September 13, 9:00 AM — Peters Couch vs My Domain Salt River (Rhodes Recreation Ground B)
A genuine promotion six-pointer to kick off Sunday. Peters Couch, boasting the division's biggest social media following and talisman striker Leigh Austin, currently sit third — the promotion playoff spot — and come into this unbeaten in their recent run. Fourth-placed My Domain Salt River, well-funded and steadily improving, played out a goalless draw with second-placed Washed Athletic last weekend. A win here for either side could be huge in the run-in for that automatic promotion picture.
Sunday, September 13, 9:00 AM — College House vs 11 And Under (UCT FC Kopano Astroturf)
College House, nicknamed the Jags, produced arguably the shock of the season last weekend, stunning high-flying Avenue Rangers 1-0 to snap a miserable run. Still bottom-two and staring at automatic relegation, they'll hope that result is the spark they need. Standing in their way are 11 And Under, the plucky newcomers managed by the "Founder and Flappy" duo, who are themselves fresh off a 5-0 demolition of University House. A confidence clash if ever there was one.
Sunday, September 13, 10:30 AM — OBZ Square vs Idiots FC (UCT FC Kopano Astroturf)
The headline act. League leaders OBZ Square, marshalled by player-manager and ISL veteran Lwazi Mhlongo, remain utterly imperious — ten wins from eleven and a scarcely believable +35 goal difference after last week's 9-0 demolition job. They welcome fifth-placed Idiots FC, who've found a bit of form themselves with a 2-0 win over V-Chester. It would take something remarkable to derail the OBZ Square promotion express, but Idiots FC will at least fancy testing them.
With OBZ Square and Washed Athletic holding a firm grip on the two automatic promotion places, Peters Couch fighting to secure that vital third-spot playoff berth, and College House and Quality Ballers FC still occupying the automatic relegation zone with Woolsack clinging to the relegation playoff spot, every point matters more than ever. Buckle up — First Division football does not disappoint!
