Successful First Weekend of Club Volleyball
The Meerkat Tournament in Grande Prairie was the place to be this past weekend as club volleyball teams showcased their skills in an electrifying showdown. It was a thrilling start to the season for many players who were experiencing the intensity of club level competition for the first time. Despite the nerves, each team proved their readiness and delivered some jaw-dropping volleyball performances. Let's dive into the results!
The U14 Girls may have finished 4th in their division with an 0-3 record, but don't let that fool you. These girls played with such ferocity that they managed to spoil the dreams of Peace River, one of the division winners, in the playoffs. They fought hard in the quarterfinals but fell short against a formidable Fairview team. Nevertheless, their close matches showcased their potential and made their club proud!
The U15 Girls faced an uphill battle in their first match against a fierce SPVC team, but they didn't let that discourage them. They bounced back brilliantly in their next two games, finishing the Round Robin tied for 1st with a 2-1 record. They continued their winning streak in the playoffs, but unfortunately couldn't overcome another strong SPVC team in the quarterfinals. However, their determination shone through as they fought tooth and nail for the Bronze Medal, ultimately emerging victorious after 4 hard-fought matches. What an impressive performance, girls!
The U17/18 Girls started their season on a high note with a win against NBCVC, but faced a tough loss to Velocity in their second game. Undeterred, they battled valiantly against a formidable Grizzlies team in the playoffs, keeping the game close despite falling in straight sets. This set the stage for a do-or-die rematch against Velocity, where the girls left everything on the court but unfortunately couldn't secure the win. Despite the outcome, their relentless effort throughout the weekend was truly inspiring. Great job, ladies!
The U18 Boys kicked off the tournament with a short bench, but that didn't stop them from delivering some jaw-dropping volleyball. They put up a strong fight in their first game against NBCVC, narrowly losing in the 3rd set. Their next opponent, the talented Beaverlodge team, may have won in straight sets, but the U18 Boys gave them a run for their money. In the playoffs, they faced yet another tough Beaverlodge team, falling short once again. However, they redeemed themselves in a thrilling rematch against NBCVC, winning in a nail-biting 3rd set. With a chance at a berth in the bronze medal game on the line, they battled it out with SPVC, but unfortunately came up just short in a heart-wrenching defeat (26-24,25-23). The boys played their hearts out and made their club incredibly proud!
This first weekend of volleyball was a testament to the growth and preparedness of this club. Each team showed improvement with every game and left us eagerly anticipating their upcoming Premiers in February. The U14 (Feb 3-4), U15 (Feb 24-25), U17/18 Girls (Feb 3-4, 24-25), and U18 Boys (Feb 9-10) will be competing in various locations in Edmonton and Area, and we couldn't be more thrilled to witness their continued success. Best of luck to all our teams as they strive for greatness in their upcoming Premiers!
