volleyBallers of Exton: Events & Recreation Outdoor Grass ‘Old Head’ Rules:
- No indoor tipping (poke or rollshots only)
- Hand setting should be clean and simultaneous
- No hand setting over the net…period!
- No let serves…also, period!
- Serve Receive: A serve is not considered a hard-driven ball and therefore may not be double-contacted or played with any finger action. Service may be received with an open-hand action ONLY if the ball is contacted by the palm or other hard surface of the hand. No finger pads may be used while receiving service. The ball must rebound off the receiving surface without using any finger action and may not come to rest. Hands do not have to be touching or together, but if the hands are apart, the ball must be contacted simultaneously.
- Co-ed Courtesy Rule: No courtesy rule in Co-ed A. For Co-Ed BB: Men must serve to the Man’s half of the court. Women may serve either side. One missed courtesy serve is allowable per game with no fault. Any subsequent missed courtesy service will be considered a fault and loss of serve
- Block Touch: A blocking contact is not counted as a team hit
- Interference: A player may enter into the opponent’s space, court and/or free zone, provided that this does not interfere with the opponent’s play. If a player goes under the net and contacts an opponent, this is automatic interference that results in the player’s team losing the rally
- Ball crossing the net: The ball sent to the opponent’s court must go over the net within the crossing space. The crossing space is the part of the vertical top plane of the net & at the sides, by the net posts and their imaginary extension
- Subs: When a sub is needed, try to find a sub that is at a similar playing level as your assigned partner
- Ball: The Wilson Optx AVP Official Beach Volleyball (Yellow and Black) is the official ball and will take priority over other outdoor volleyballs
- Pursuit Rule: Players may not enter into another court, even after hitting the ball..safety first people!
- Defensive First Touch: On a hard-driven ball, the ball may contact various parts of the body consecutively, provided that the contacts occur during one action. The play must be reactive in nature. If the player has time to contact the ball cleanly, they must.
- Definition of hard-driven ball: ball can have no upward trajectory when leaving the attackers hand
- Open Hand Receive: Players may open-hand (using finger tips) pass an offensive hit only if the ball is hit on a continuous downward path ( aka. ‘hard-driven’). If the offensive-driven ball arcs at all and you use your open hands to pass it, it is a violation
Misc Rules:
- Touching the poll at net height is a fault. Touching a pole below the net is not, unless the net is disrupted by the player
- If the hitting action finishes in touching the net, it is a fault, even if the ball was grounded before the touch

Quads rules:
- All rules already listed apply to quads as well (no net serves, block is not a touch, no indoor tipping)
- Servers must rotate in same order throughout a set
- Guys can NOT jump serve when net is set at Women’s height
- No guy may attack the ball at all in women's height games. No 10ft line in the grass, there for…no attack. An attack is considered a ball hit above the top of the net and/or hard driven.
- Teams must consist of 2 guys and 2 girls, which much remain the balance on the court at all times
As Rich Starr says “no one is winning a gold medal here” so please re-play anything in question, be a good sport, clean up after yourself and HAVE SOME FUN!
